Jon and Emily met in December 2002 when, fortuitously, their respective parents booked the same “Jew Cruise” vacation during the holiday season. On the first day of the cruise, Emily and Jon met in one of the ship’s many hot tubs, talked for several hours (to the point of severe finger pruning) and were inseparable for the remainder of the week.
Despite their instant connection on the calm Caribbean seas, the two were unsure as to how their new relationship would translate in the real world, especially when Emily left to study abroad in Spain a mere two weeks after they met. Jon, then an analyst at Lehman Brothers in New York, thought it wise to invest in their relationship by buying a superb international call plan (they talked for hours a day, everyday). He also singlehandedly buoyed the travel industry with a trip to London, Spain and Amsterdam so they could continue growing their relationship in person even during the long separation.
The investments paid off, as Emily decided to graduate early from the University of North Carolina and move up to Manhattan, partly to get a head-start on her career but also to be with Jon. Soon after, they acquired their beloved cockapoo, Shaina, who still amazes them with her incredible talent of sleeping 23 hours a day. In November 2006, Jon asked for Emily’s hand in marriage (a story in itself) and the two were married 18 months later in Charlotte, North Carolina. The two now live in Atlanta, Georgia, and enjoy paying a lot less for their apartment as well as eating at every sushi place in a 20-mile radius.
